have utterly lost the taste for and the knack of strong writing particularly in criticizing persons. When I take my pen intending to hit hard, the picture of the other man stands before my eyes and seems to say: 'You do not know what I have to say for myself. I too have ideals however much they may be obscured by my conduct. Judge me as you would yourself. I avoid all adjectives of judgment as poison and try in all that I say to be completely objective. This has become a habit, and I do not doubt that in all circumstances, it is a healthy one. As regards this particular matter, the thought that after all, the man takes his life in his hands, weighs my judgement. As for the curious crowd, they, I suppose, find relief from the tyranny of daily circumstances in witnessing facts which show or seem to show that one man at least is able to rise above them."
- યૌગિક સિદ્ધિઓના પ્રદર્શનની બાબતમાં મે જે વાકયો લખ્યાં છે તે તમે કહે છે કે વધારે કડક હોવા જોઈતાં હતાં. તે વિષે જણાવવાનું કે કડક લખાણ લખવાના, ખાસ કરીને બીજાએાની ટીકા કરવાની બાબતમાં, મારો રસ ઊડી ગયો છે. મારા સ્વભાવમાં જ એ રહ્યું નથી. કોઈના ઉપર સખ્ત પ્રહાર કરવા માટે મારી કલમ ઉપાડું છું ત્યારે સામા માણસનું ચિત્ર મારી સામે ખડું થાય છે. મને જાણે એમ કહેતું હોયની કે “ મારા બચાવમાં મારે જે કહેવાનું છે તે તમે ક્યાં જાણો છો ? મારે પણ મારા આદર્શો તો હશે જ ને? મારા વર્તનથી તે કદાચ ઢંકાઈ ગયા હોય, તેથી શું ? તમે તમારી જાતના ન્યાય કરી એ રીતે મારો ન્યાય કરો.’ એટલે હું ટીકા કરનારાં વિશેષણો વાપરવાનું તો ઝેરની માફક ટાળું છું અને મારે જે કહેવાનું હોય તે પૂરેપૂરો, પરલક્ષી થઈને કહેવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરું છું. આ મારો સ્વભાવ બની ગયો છે. અને એમ થવું હું મેશાં સારું જ છે એ વિષે મને શંકા નથી. પ્રસ્તુત વિષયમાં મને લાગ્યું કે કાંઈ નહીં તો માણસ પોતાની જિંદગીનું જોખમ ખેડે છે. એ વસ્તુએ જ મારી ટીકાને મળી કરી નાખી. કુતૂહ લથી એકઠા થયેલા ટોળાની બાબતમાં મને લાગ્યું કે રાજની ઘટમાળના ત્રાસમાંથી આવું કંઈક જોવા મળે, જેમાં તેમને લાગે કે કંઈ નહીં તે એકાદ માણસ તો આવી અલૌકિક શક્તિ બતાવી શકે છે, તેથી તેઓને કાંઈક આસાએશ મળે.’
