he whose eyes have seen the blessed Vision, but he who fails in this has verily failed. For a man may fail to win fair body, may fail to win power or office, or a king's throne, and yet it is not failure. Failure it is, although he should gain all else if a man fail of this - for whose winning he ought to reject thrones and principalities of all the earth and sea and sky, if by leaving these behind him and looking beyond them his vision might be converted thither and he should see.' "Plotinus gives this account of the ascetic process: "Withdraw in thyself and see thyself. And if as yet thou see no beauty in thyself, then do as does the maker of an image, which shall at last be fair; as he strikes off a part and a part planes away, as he makes this smooth and releases that, until he has revealed upon the image its face of beauty. So do thou strip away all excess and make straight all crookedness. Whatsoever is yet prisoned in darkness, labour to release it that it may be bright, and cease not from the fashioning of thine own image, until that day when the glory of virtue as of a god shall flame upon thee and thine eyes shall behold serenity established on her stainless pedestal.'" | “ હુ પ્લેટિનસના લેખેનું ચિંતન કરી રહ્યો છું. માણસ વિષયમાંથી નિવૃત્ત થાય છે ત્યારે જ સૌન્દર્યને અનુભવ કરી શકે છે. એના ઉપર ગીતાના જેટલે જ ભાર એણે મૂકયો છે. એ શાશ્વત સૌદર્ય વિષે કહે છે કે એના ઉપાસકને એ સુંદર બનાવે છે, જેથી તેઓ પણ પ્રેમાહ બને છે. “ આત્માને અંતિમ અને પરમ પુરુષાર્થ એને માટે જ હોવો જોઈએ. એ બધા પુરુષાર્થનું ફળ એ છે કે ચરમ દર્શનના તેએ અધિકારી થાય છે. જેને એ દર્શન થયું છે તેઓ ધન્ય છે. જે એ દર્શન નથી પામ્યા તે શું પામ્યા છે ? માણસને સુંદર શરીર ન મળે, સત્તા અથવા પદ ન મળે, રાજગાદી ન મળે, પણ તેમાં કશું ખાવાપણું નથી. ખાવાપણે તો એમાં છે કે આવું બધું મળ્યા છતાં પેલાં દર્શન ન થયાં હોય. એ પ્રાપ્ત કરવાને માટે માણસ રાજગાદીનો ઈનકાર કરે, આ પૃથ્વી, સમુદ્ર અને આકાશ ઉપરની સત્તાનો ઈનકાર કરે, જે એ સહુને જતાં કરવાથી, એ બધાંથી પર થવાથી એની દૃષ્ટિ [ તરફ વળે અને એને ઇનાં દર્શન થાય.” ૧૮૩ Gandhi Heritage Portal
