જયકરે મોકલેલું કીર્તિકરનું Studies in Vedanta (વેદાન્તનું અધ્યયન ) બાપુ વાંચે છે. તેમાં તત્વમસિવાળા પ્રકરણના આરંભમાં હેગલનું વાકય ટાંકયું છે તે બતાવ્યું : "It is man's highest dignity that he should know himself to be a nullity."
- પાતે શૂન્ય છે એમ માણસ જાણે એ જ માણસનું મોટામાં મોટું ગૌરવ છે.” ' મેં કહ્યું : “ એ તો શૂન્ય થઈ જવાની આપ વાત કરી છે. એ જ છે.” બાપુને મૌન હતું એટલે હસ્યા. એટલા માટે જ એ વાક્ય એમણે બતાવ્યું હતું.
રોલાંએ લખેલું વિવેકાનંદનું જીવનચરિત વાંચતાં ઘણી વાતો જાણવાની મળે છે. અમેરિકા જતાં પહેલાંનું એમનું ભારતભ્રમણ તો સૌ કોઈ જાણે છે, પણ ભ્રમણને અંતે દુ:ખી, પીડિત, દરિદ્ર ભારત એમણે નજરે જોયું. “દરિદ્રનારાયણ’નાં દર્શન કર્યા અને એની સેવાર્થે પોતાની જાત નિવેદિત કરી. "It was the misery under his eyes, the misery of India that filled his mind to the exclusion of every other thought. It consumed him during sleepless nights. At Cape Commorin it caught and held him in its jaws. He dedicated his life to the unhappy masses.... He told them with pathetic passion of the imperious call of suffering India that forced him to go. It is now my firm conviction that it is futile to preach religion amongst them, without first trying to remove their poverty and their sufferings. It is for these reasons to find more means for the salvation of the poor India, that I am now going to America." “ પોતાની નજરે જોયેલી ભારતમાતાની કંગાળિયતના વિચાર એમના મગજમાં એવા ભરાઈ ગયું કે તેણે બીજા વિચારોને હાંકી કાઢ્યા. એ વિચારે એમને બાવ્યા અને નિદ્રા વિનાની રાતો કઢાવી. કન્યાકુમારી આગળ તો એ વસ્તુએ એમને બરાબર ઘેર્યા. પોતાનું જીવન આ દુ:ખીજનોને એમણે અર્પણ કર્યું. પીડિત ભારતના ન ઠેલી શકાય એવા પુકારે એમને બહાર જવાની ફરજ પાડી એ વાત એમણે આદ્ર હૃદયે લોકો આગળ કહી. મારી પાકી ખાતરી થઈ ગઈ કે આ ભૂખ્યા માણસ આગળ ધર્મની વાત કરવી મિસ્યા છે. તેમની ગરીબી અને તેમનાં દુઃખ ટાળવાનો २०४
