એમને લખ્યું : "Your touching letter of 23rd inst. came into my hand today. Papa's letter I have not received yet. My correspondence is being overhandled by the authorities. There is therefore much delay and uncertainty about it. The incoming letters are delivered in good time. "I loathe to argue about death in the face of the tragedy that has overtaken you. You will say with Job, 'miserable comforter'. But I do feel that if we would know God, we have got to learn to rejoice in death. When Narsinha Mehta the first poet-devotee of Gujarat lost his son he is said to have joyed over it and exclaimed: 'It is well that this burden is lifted. Now I shall meet God soon. This is an unhappy rendering of a beautiful musical verse. May you see greater light out of this darkness. I know that you stand in no need of any comfort from any of us and that it has to come from within. This is merely an evidence of what all of us three are feeling about you." તમારા તા. ૨૩મીના હૃદયદ્રાવક કાગળ આજે મને મળ્યા. હજી પાપાના કાગળ મને નથી મળ્યા. સત્તાવાળાઓ મારા પત્રવ્યવહારની વધારે પડતી તકેદારી રાખે છે. એટલે કાગળા મળવામાં બહુ ઢીલ થાય છે, અને અનિશ્ચિતતા પણ બહું રહું છે. આવતા કાગળો વખતસર મળે છે ખરા. - “ તમારી ઉપર જે આફત આવી પડી છે તે વખતે મૃત્યુ વિષે ચર્ચા કરવાનું મને ગમતું નથી. જોબની માફક તમે કહી શકે કે “ એ ક ગાળ આશ્વાસક” છે. પણ મને એટલું તો લાગે જ છે કે આપણે જે ઈશ્વરને ઓળખીએ તો મૃત્યુમાં પણ આનંદ માણતાં શીખીએ જ. ગુજરાતના પહેલા ભક્તકવિ નરસિહ મહેતાનો દીકરો ગુજરી ગયા ત્યારે કહે છે કે તેમણે ઉત્સવ માર્યો અને બોલ્યા: “ ભલું થયું ભાંગી જંજાળ, સુખે ભજીશું શ્રીગોપાળ.' આ અંધકારમાંથી તમને વધુ પ્રકાશ સાંપડે. હું જાણું છું કે અમારા કાઈના તરફના આશ્વાસનની તમારે જરૂર નથી. એ તો અંદરથી જ મળી શકે. અમને ત્રણેને તમારે માટે કેટલું લાગે છે તે દર્શાવવા પૂરતું જ આટલું લખ્યું છે.” સુબયાની બાપડાની દીકરી એ જેલમાંથી આવ્યા તે જ દિવસે મરી ગઈ. તેને લખ્યું : "I can understand your grief and her's over the loss of your child of whom Lalita used to write to me in such ૩૨૯
