કેટલાક રમૂજી કાગળેા હતા. એક જણે પૂછ્યું : "સાચું બોલવાથી કોઈ માણસના પ્રાણ જતો હોય છે અને જૂઠું બોલે તો ન જતો હોય તો સાચું બોલવું કે જૂઠું બોલવું ? " બાપુએ એને લખ્યું : " સત્ય જ્યાં પ્રસ્તુત હોય ત્યાં કોઈ પણ ભોગે કહેવું જોઈએ. ' એક અમેરિકને લખ્યું કે. તમે ઈશુના સિદ્ધાંતોને પ્રચાર કરવામાં જ સમય આપશો એવી શરતે છૂટવા માગતા હો તો હું તમને બ્રિટિશ સરકાર પાસે તુરત છોડાવું. એને પણ બાપુએ જવાબ આપવાની તસ્દી લીધી :
“I thank you for your letter. My answer to your first question is that I would not like anybody to get me out, and certainly not on any condition. I cannot give up, for any consideration whatsoever, what I regard as my life's mission."
" તમારા કાગળ માટે આભારી છું. તમારા પહેલા સવાલના જવાબમાં જણાવવાનું કે કોઈ મને છોડાવે એ મને પસંદ નથી. વળી કોઈ શરત કબૂલ કરીને તો હું છૂટવા ઇચ્છતો જ નથી. જેને મેં મારા જીવનનું એક ધર્મકાર્ય માન્યું છે તે હું કોઈ પણ બદલાની લાલચે ન જ છેાડી શકું.”
એક અમેરિકનનો સારો કાગળ આવ્યો હતો. પોતે પહેલાં નાસ્તિક હતો, પછી ત્રણ વર્ષ જેલમાં ગયા — ધર્મની ખાતર વિરોધ કરનાર તરીકે – અને આસ્તિક થયો. પછી ક્રિશ્ચિયન સાયન્સ વિષે વાંચ્યું; તેમાં શ્રદ્ધા જાગી. જોકે એ પંથવાળા ગાંધીજીની હિલચાલ વિષે ચૂપ રહે છે. પોતાના છાપામાં બ્રિટિશ સામ્રાજ્યશાહીને જ 'ટેકો આપે છે. ક્રિશ્ચિયન સાયન્સ વિષે બાપુનો અભિપ્રાય શું છે એ પૂછ્યું. બાપુએ એને લખ્યું :
"I have met many Christian Science friends. Some of these have sent me Mrs. Eddy's works. I was never able to read them through. I did however glance through them. They did not produce the impression the friends who sent them to me had expected. I have learnt from childhood and experience has confirmed the soundness of the teaching that spiritual gifts should not be used for the purpose of healing bodily ailments. I do however believe in abstention from use of drugs and the like. But this is purely on physical, hygienic grounds. I do also believe in utter reliance upon God, but then not in the hope that He will heal me, but in order to submit entirely to His will, and to share the fate of millions who even though they wished to, can have
