ધમ બાહ્ય કર્મ કાંડમાં નથી ૨૭૯ ** આ લખતો હતો ત્યારે વિજયરાઘવાચાર્ય આવ્યા અને મારા મન ઉપર રહી ગયેલા સંસ્કારની વાતો મેં એમને સંભળાવી. તેની એમના ઉપર બહુ અસર થઈ. અમારા ઘણા દક્ષિણવાસીઓને લાગે છે તેમ એમને પણ આ બહુ વિચિત્ર લાગ્યું.” | સાવિત્રી અને સત્યવાનના ધર્મસંકટના વર્ણન આવ્યા કરે છે. પાછા બાપુએ બંનેને દઢ રહેવાને માટે સંદેશા મોકલ્યા : "The key to Satyavan's purity is perhaps in your own hands. You have to be patient like the Himalayas and to have the charity of the ocean. You must not irritate him on any account whatsoever nor sit in judgment upon him if he yields to his animal passion. You do not need to go through the struggle because you are a stranger to that passion. Your brahmacharya therefore is no merit in you, but Satyavan's is. All the time he is struggling against the Devil and if he finally subdues it, it would be indeed a great merit and a singular triumph. Let us all therefore pray for him that he may have the necessary strength to overcome the enemy." ૮૪ સત્યવાનની પવિત્રતાની ચાવી કદાચ તારા હાથમાં હોય. તારે હિમાલય જેવા વૈર્યવાન અને સાગર જેવા ઉદાર થવાનું છે. કોઈ પણ કારણે તારે એને ગુસ્સે ન કરવા જોઈએ. એ વિકારવશ થાય એના ન્યાય તોળવા ન બેસવું જોઈએ. તારે કશો પ્રયત્ન નથી કરવા પડતા કારણ તું વિકારને ઓળખતી જ નથી. તેથી તારું બ્રહ્મચર્ય એ તારે માટે ગુણ નથી, પણ સત્યવાનને માટે એમ છે. કારણ તેને હમેશાં શત્રની સામે ઝઘડવું પડે છે. અને જે છેવટે એને એ પરાજિત કરી શકે તો એણે ભારે પરાક્રમ કરીને એક મોટી વસ્તુ સિદ્ધ કરી ગણાશે. એટલે આપણે સૌ પ્રાર્થના કરીએ કે દુશ્મનને પછાડવા માટે આવશ્યક બળ તેને મળા.' ટેકસને એક કાગળમાં : " What a joy it would be when people realize that! religion consists not in outward ceremonial, but an evergrowing inward response to the highest impulses that man is capable of." કેટલા આનંદની વાત એ ગણાય જે લોકે એટલું સમજતા થઈ જાય કે ધર્મ બાહ્ય કર્મકાંડમાં નથી, પણ માણસની ઊંચામાં ઊંચી વૃત્તિઓનું અંતરથી વધુ ને વધુ અનુસરણ કરવામાં છે.”
