- “ગોપીજનવલ્લભની ભક્તિ ઘર છોડી ગોસાંઈ કરે,
- “વિભૂત લગાવે, અલખ જગાવે, ગોકુલને વશ રાખી ફરે.
- “ગોવ્રજમાં પરિવ્રાજક જોગી જોગ ધરે હરિ અલખ તણો;
- “અલખ કરે લખ, વિભૂત કરે ભવફેર જ લક્ષચુર્યાશીતણો.
- “સઉ સંસાર જટિલ જટારૂપ બાંધી દીધો, શિરે રાખી લીધો;
- “રક્ત દીસે પણ અરક્ત એવો એક જ ભગવો ભેખ કીધો.
- “અજ્ઞાની જન સબ સોતે હય, ઉસમેં સંયમી જાગત હૈ,
- “વિષ્ણુદાસજી લોટત લોટત સબમૈં અલખ જગાવત હે.”
અલખપુરીની પાસે આ વચન સરસ્વતીચંદ્રે ત્રણવાર બોલાવ્યાં અને અંતે અર્થ સમજી પ્રસન્ન થયો, અને મનમાં બોલ્યો: “This is true. Those are not apathetic to the world that show their right to live in it by being useful to their fellow-men in some form; and the ascetic, that deluges the world with his poetry and philosophy without destroying it, does a duty; and, if he dost, that, he is not bound to confine himself within the rooms where his father has left, his hoards of money and where his wife wants him to provide for her children. Duty in the best form is the motto of these men, and they are not bound to be home-keeping youths, with homely wits. The point is Duty, and, in this cage at least, asceticism does not murder Duty ! Beautiful ! ”
વિષ્ણુદાસ બોલ્યાઃ “નવીનચંદ્ર, અમે જેમ રક્ત નથી તેમ વિરક્ત પણ નથી; અમે તો માત્ર અરક્ત છીયે. પછી વ્યવહારમાં અરક્ત અને વિરક્ત પર્યાયરૂપ હોવાથી ગમે તે બોલીયે તે જુદી વાત. અમે કાંઈ સંસારનો ત્યાગ કરતા નથી - અમે તો તેને જટામાં બાંધી રાખીયે છીયે, તેને ભસ્મરૂપ બનાવી શરીરે ચોળીયે છીયે, અને એ વિભૂતિ ચોળી અલખ જગાવીયે છીયે. અલખ લખને ત્યજતું નથી. માત્ર ભસ્મના ભાર નીચે અગ્નિ જાગે તેમ લખના ભાર નીચે જાગતા અલખનો ભડકો કરી જોનારને દેખાડીયે છીયે ! અને એને
