“My dear Chandrakanta ! Our joint family system has but a blasting influence on the growth of our individuals, on our economical and moral conditions, and even on our national and political growth. It has kept our beings stunted in intelligence and action. It has turned our best sentiments into cruel mockeries and machines for grinding down the nervous Systems of our young men and women in all ranks of life. Our idea that the world is misery, is special to India, being born of this our special national engine for destroying all warmth of youth; and lo, we are all only old men or children in India in spite of our ages! And for any reform, woe be unto every idea of your social or domestic reconstruction or even improvement so long as you have not touched the root of the disease and said : Down with the joint family !”
“પ્રિય ચંદ્રકાંત! હું રેડિકલ છું. અતિસુધારક છું., અને માટે જ લોકેાયે તિરસ્કારમાં આપેલું નામ સ્વીકારી ઉદ્ધતલાલ નામ સ્વીકાર્યું છે. મ્હારા મનમાં સિદ્ધાંત બંધાયો છે; અને ઘણા અનુભવે, ઘણા અવલોકને, ઘણા વાચને, અને ઘણા વિચારે, મ્હારા હૃદયમાં નિશ્ચય રચ્યો છે. આ આપણા દેશમાં મૂર્ખતા અને દુષ્ટતાની ભરેલી અવ્યવસ્થામાંથી લોકનો ઉદ્ધાર કરવાને માટે ઉદ્ધત થવાની આવશ્યકતા જ છે. ઉદ્ધતિ વિના આપણી ઉન્નતિ નથી, અને આપણી વિદ્યાના સંસ્કારોને અને આપણી બુદ્ધિના નિર્ણયોને આ દેહ છતાં કોઈ રીતે પણ સફળ થયા જોવાની ઈચ્છા હોય તો આ દેશમાં સર્વત્ર કચરાપટ્ટીના ઢગલાઓ પેઠે રૂઢિને નામે રૂઢ થયેલા મૂર્ખાચાર અને દુષ્ટાચારને ઝાડી ઝાપટી આપણી સર્વ ભૂમિને સાફ કરી દેવી અને તેમ કરવાને માટે દરેક મનુષ્યે પ્રથમ આરંભ પોતાના ઘરમાં કરવો. તમે પુછશો કે મ્હેં મ્હારા ઘરમાં શું કર્યું ?”
તો સાંભળો. છોકરાંએ માબાપની આજ્ઞા પાળવી અને ઉપકાર માનવો એ બે સુત્ર આપણા લોકમાં મર્યાદાહીન થઈ પ્રવર્ત્યાં છે.
