2019/4/28 વેરાવળ શિક્ષક સમાજ, જેટલું કઠિન તેટલું જ સૂમ છે; અને જેને એ કાર્યની મહત્તા તથા જવાબદારીનું ભાન નથી તેવા અમલદાર કેળવણી ખાતામાં રહીને પિતાના નિર્વાહ કરતાં વધારે કશું સિદ્ધ કરી શકતા નથી. મી. તરખડ જેવા ઉત્સાહી નિપુણ અને પોતે સ્વીકારેલા કાર્ય સાથે તન્મયતા પામેલા સુજનોને હાથેજ સત્કાર્ય થવાનો સંભવ છે, એવાં નરરનો વારંવાર નીપજતાં નથી, અને શાસ્ત્રના વિષયમાં કે કલાના વિષયમાં દીર્ઘકાલપત જેની અસર રહ્યાં કરે તેવી નવી પદ્ધતિ જનાર બુદ્ધિભવ ઘણુ કાલને અંતરે ઉભવે છે. et વેરાવળ શિક્ષક સમાજના કાર્ય ઉપર ચર્ચા કરતાં ‘સુદર્શન’–ના માર્ચ માસના અંકમાં અમે જે વિચારો દર્શાવ્યા હતા તેમાં નીતિ અને ધર્મ સંબંધી કેળવણી માટે સમાજે પ્રયત્ન કર્યો નથી એવું લખવામાં આવ્યું હતું. મી. તરખડ જેવા પોતાના કર્તવ્ય સાથે તન્મય થયેલા પુરૂની દૃષ્ટિ તે લેખ ઉપર ન પડે એમ બને જ નહિ. તેમણે તે જોઇને તુરતજ વળાની કન્યાશાળામાં ભાષણ કરતાં એ વાતના ઈશારે કરી એનું’ ઉત્તર આપવા યત્ન કર્યો એટલું જ નહિ પણ વેરાવળ શિક્ષક સમાજના મંત્રી રા. સા. ગણપતરામજી જેઓ પણ એમના જેટલાજ ઉત્સાહી, આગ્રહી, અને કેળવણીના કામમાં તન્મય થયેલા સુજન છે, તેમની મારફત તે ભાપણના ઉપયોગી ભાગને ઉતારો અમારા તરફ મોકલી આપે. આવી રીતે ઉપયોગી વિયેની ચર્ચા કરવાની પદ્ધતિ, પ્રત્યેક ખાતાના અધિકારીઓને ખરેખર અનુકરણ કરવા જેવી છે. એથીજ વિદ્યા, કલા, વિચાર આદિની વૃદ્ધિ થાય છે એટલું જ નહિ, પણ ઘણીક ગેરસમજ અને મતભેદની વાતોની સ્પષ્ટતા થતાં શાતિ અને સંપમાં વધારે થઈ કઈ પણ સમૂહની કાર્યસાધક શક્તિમાં અધિક બલ આવે છે. તેમના ભાષણના તે ભાગ આ પ્રમાણે છે:— I am tempted to take advantage of this opportunity to meet some criticism that has been recently made about the proceed. ings of the Veraval Educational Conference. It has been stated that the Conference has paid no thought to the subject of Moral Education. I am very sorry that this has been said because, as a matter of fact, the Conference gave that subject very serious consideration. The result of their deliberations was that it was not desirable to cram the child's mind with moral precepts only as that plan was likely to make them into prigs or hypocrites. It was thought that the more certain way was to make children draw their own moral precepts from interesting stories told them in class. A child can without hesitation judge whether a certain boy in the story just told has been behaving well or ill, and whether he should be honoured or abhorred.
