પોપટ– તે તમે તે વાલી મોકલ્યા છે કે સુગ્રીવ ? તમારે ત્યાં પણ
તમે વૃદ્ધ થયા છો ને તમારા કરતાં સંખ્યામાં ને બળમાં વાલીલોક વધી
ગયા છે ને તમારો ભાવ કોણ પુછે છે કે અમારો પુછશે ? માટે જ
મ્હારું પ્રથમથી ક્હેવું છે કે
આટલું બોલતાં બોલતાં પક્ષીના નેત્રમાંથી અશ્રુધારાઓ ચાલી અને નીચેના મહાસાગરમાં ટપકવા લાગી. તેની સાથે વૃદ્ધ વાનર નીચે ઉતરવા લાગ્યો, વાયુરથનાં સૂત્રો પવનના ઝપાટાથી દૂર ખેંચાઈ જઇ અદૃશ્ય થઈ ગયાં, અને માત્ર ઉપર વાયુરથનું તળીયું ને નીચે મહાસાગરનો અપાર વિસ્તાર દૃષ્ટિવિષયમાં બાકી રહ્યાં. પોપટની અશ્રુધારાઓ કોઈ વાદળા પેઠે નીચે વર્ષવા લાગી, કુમુદ તે જોઈ રોવા જેવી થઈ ને માત્ર સરસ્વતીચંદ્ર ઘડીક ઉંચે ને ઘડી નીચે જોઈ રહ્યો. પોપટને અને કુમુદને જોતાં એ પણ દયાર્દ્ર થયો ને કુમુદને છાતી સરસી ડાબી તેને, પોપટ સાંભળે એમ, ક્હેવા લાગ્યો.
“કુમુદ ! પ્રિય કુમુદ ! પ્રસન્ન થા ! આપણા દેશ ઉપર ઈશ્વરની કૃપા થશે. પાંડુરાજાએ પાંચ પુત્ર માગ્યા ત્યારે પ્રથમ પુત્ર જે ધર્મ માગ્યો તે જ ધર્મને આ અર્જુન પણ પોતાને જયેષ્ટ બન્ધુ ગણે છે, આપણો દેશ દ્રવ્યહીન છે, દુ:ખી છે, ક્લેશી છે, અધર્મી છે, શસ્ત્રહીન છે, પ્રવાસહીન છે, પ્રારબ્ધવાદી છતાં પ્રારબ્ધહીન છે, વિદ્યાહીન છે અને તેનો નાશ સમીપ દેખાય છે તેવે કાળે પણ આશાનાં ચિન્હ જો ! આટલે દિવસે જે ધર્મને આ પાશ્ચાત્ય અર્જુને મ્હોટો ભાઈ ગણ્યો છે[૧] તેનો અવતાર આપણા
