પણ ગુરુશિષ્યની વાત કરતાં વિચિત્ર વાત કરે છે કે મહાપુરુષો શિષ્ય ન થઈ શકે; જયારે આપણે ત્યાં મોટા સાધુસંતો કોઈ ગુરુ વિનાના નહોતા. "Eminent individuals can never be disciples; it is physiologically impossible for them. No matter how capable they may be of submitting to an ideal, an institution or an objective spirit, their pride, and not only their pride, but above all, their inner truthfulness, would prevent them from following a living man, not as a duly accredited representative, but a man as such. While they behold only a man subject to human failings, and weakness, they cannot believe in divinity. Even in India par-excellence the land of faith, no founder of religion of whom I have heard has mentally important disciples during his life time. The first who swarm around a new centre of belief are, without exception poor in spirit and superstitious for they want above all to be led."... “ મહાપુરુષો કદી શિષ્ય ન થઈ શકે. એ વસ્તુ સ્વભાવે જ તેમને માટે અશકહ્યું છે. કાઈ આદર્શને, કેાઈ સંસ્થાને, કેાઈ બાહ્ય તત્ત્વને આધીન રહેવાની શક્તિ તેમનામાં ગમે તેટલી હોય તે પણ તેમનું અભિમાન અને કેવળ અભિમાન જ નહી પણ એમની આંતરિક સત્યપરાયણતા કેાઈ પણ જીવતા માણસનું અનુસરણ કરતાં તેમને રોકે. તેઓ જાણે છે કે માણસ જીવે છે ત્યાં સુધી તેનામાં માણસ તરીકેની ત્રુટિઓ અને નબળાઈ એ હોય જ છે, એટલે તેનું દેવતાઈપણે એ ન જ સ્વીકારી શકે. હિંદુસ્તાન તો ધર્મપરાયણ લેાકાને મુલક ગણાય છે. ત્યાં પણ મેં' એક પણ ધમ સંસ્થાપક એવા નથી સાંભળ્યું, જેને પોતાના જીવનકાળમાં ખાસ બુદ્ધિમાન શિષ્ય મળ્યા હોય. નવા સંપ્રદાયની આસપાસ શરૂમાં જેઓ ટોળે વળે છે તેઓ નિરપવાદ રીતે મદશક્તિવાળા અને અંધશ્રદ્ધાવાળા હોય છે. તેમને તો બીજા કશા કરતાં કેાઈ દોરનારા જ જોઈતા હોય છે.” , . . રામકૃષ્ણ–વિવેકાનંદ, તોતાપુરી-રામકૃ ષ્ણ, શંકર-ગાડપાદાચાર્ય, છતાં !! આ તારનાર કોણ ?
