બહારવટીઆએ પોતાનું મજબૂત ઝાડની બનાવટનું ધનુષ ખેંચ્યું અને તીર છોડ્યું. એ તીર શત્રુસૈન્યમાં ઉભેલા ન્યાયાધીશની છાતીમાં અથડાઈને ત્રણ ટુકડા થઈ ગયું, કેમકે ન્યાયાધીશે બખ્તર પહેરેલુ હતું. નિ:શસ્ત્ર થઈ ગયેલા બહારવટીઆને ન્યાયાધીશે હાકલ કરી કે
Yield thee Cloudeslee, said the Justice,
And thy bow and thy arrows the fro;
A curse on his heart, said fair Alice
That my husband counselleth so.
“ઓ ક્લાઉડેસ્લી ! તારા ધનુષ્યબાણ લઈને શરણે થઈ જા !” “નહિ નહિ!” સુંદરી ઍલીસે સામી હાકલ દીધી; “મારા ધણીને એવી શીખામણ આપનારનુ પીટ્યાનું સત્યાનાશ નીકળજો ! મારો મર્દ મૂછાળો શું હથીઆર મેલશે ?”
“ત્યારે સળગાવી મૂકો એના ઘરને !” ન્યાયાધીશે હુકમ દીધો. અને

ઠેકઠેકાણેથી તેએાએ ઘર સળગાવ્યું. આગના ભડકા આકાશે ઉઠ્યા. સુંદરી એલીસે પોકાર કર્યો કે “હાય! હાય! મને લાગે છે કે આપણે આંહી જ બળી મરશું,” પણ ત્યાં તો

બહારવટીઆ વીલીઅમે એના દિવાનખાનાની ઉંચી મેડીની પાછલી બારી ઉઘાડી અને ત્યાંથી લુગડાં બાંધીને એણે પોતાનાં એારત તથા ત્રણ બચ્ચાંને નીચે ઉતાર્યા. પછી શત્રુઓને હાકલ દીધી :
