“તું – તું ગોરો મને જવાબ દેવા આવીશ ?” કાદુએ કરડાઇભર્યો
તિરસ્કાર બતાવ્યો.
“હા, હું અંગ્રેજબચ્ચો છું, માટે જ આવીશ.”
બહારવટીયો જેકસનના સાવઝ સરખા ચહેરા સામે જોઈ રહ્યો. ફરી પૂછ્યું :
“એકલો ?”
“એકલો.”
“બીનહથીઆરે ?"
“બીનહથીઆરે !”
“આંહીથી દોઢ ગાઉ ઉપર: હેરણ નદીમાં ચાંદ ખિતાલની જગ્યા પાસે.”
એટલું કહીને બહારવટીઓ અંધારી રાતની સોડ્યમાં સમાઈ ગયો. ગેબમાંથી પણ એનાં પગલાં બોલતાં હોય, તેમ સ્કૉટની ભયભીત મડમ ચમકતી હતી. થોડીવારે એના જીવમાં જીવ આવ્યો. છાતીવાળો જુવાન જૅકસન જાણે કે બહારવટીયાના મેળાપથી બેવડો હિંમતબાજ બન્યો. એની છાતી પહોળાતી હતી. એણે જઇ સ્કૉટને વાત સંભળાવી. પાંચ જ પગલે સ્કૉટ બચી ગયો.
